Fashion Revolution Week

The Fashion Revolution is happening, and it’s ready to take the world by storm! For those of you who haven’t heard of the Fashion Revolution, it began in 2013 in the UK, as a response to the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh. It’s a global movement calling for greater transparency, sustainability, and ethics in the fashion industry.

What is the Fashion Revolution?

The Fashion Revolution is a collaborative of people from all around the world who wear clothes, make clothes, and make the fashion industry work. It’s a movement that includes the work of designers, writers, marketers, brands, retailers, fashion lovers, and more. This revolution began after the Rana Plaza disaster that killed over 1,000 people and injured 2,500 more. The brands and producers used the hashtag #Imadeyourclothes to demonstrate transparency, the reach of online media, and the power of the people to bring awareness to the cause.

Why is it important?

The Fashion Revolution was created to bring light to unethical industries and supply chain practices. This revolution promotes transparency and systematic reform of the fashion industry with a focus on supply chain operations. It was created to help people recognize that they have the power to make a positive change through fashion. This revolution aims to unite people and organizations to work together in order to radically change the way clothes are sourced, produced, and consumed – to promote clothing that is made in a safe, clean, and fair way.

Fashion Revolution Week

We asked Collyn (our Product Development Specialist in India) to share about the Fashion Revolution with a group of our artisans, called the Design Squad, in India. The Design Squad’s main role is to help create jewelry models for our new product designs. We asked the artisans to create “I made your jewelry signs,” and stressed the importance of the movementwith the young women. When Collyn was giving her team some context into the movement, she says, “I explained why the Fashion Revolution was created and their mission to bring greater transparency, sustainability, and ethics to the fashion industry. Though India shares a border with Bangladesh, no one had heard of the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Dhaka. This gave me an opportunity to dialogue with the design team about the working conditions that many people in the fashion manufacturing industry face. As we discussed the injustice of this reality, our conversation turned into a reflection on the innumerable reasons we are so thankful for the opportunity to work for a company that values and respects its employees.”

Why should YOU practice conscious consumerism?

As a consumer, you should practice conscious consumerism in order to promote the ethical and sustainable creation of fashion. Fashion shouldn’t come from exploiting workers and materials. It shouldn’t come from people who are forced to work in bad conditions for little to no pay.We would ask that you start to doactive research and work to promote companies that value and don’t physically abuse their workers.Vote with your wallet! If weas consumers actively avoid companies that don’t follow ethical practices, these companies will be forced to change for the better. That’s why we feel it’s so important to make smart choices with your purchases.
