Ankole Care Guide

1 min read

Ankole are a breed of cattle native to Africa, and hold an important place in the cultures of several Ugandan tribes. While much of Uganda is forested and tropical, other parts are dry and arid, and Ankole are perfectly suited to survive in those environments, providing an important source of food to many people.

Our jewelry and gifts are handcrafted from start to finish from recycled Ankole horn. We partner with a local craftsman who cleans, cuts, and shapes the horn. Our artisans focus on metalwork and assembly, and pairing pieces to highlight the beautiful variations in line and color present in this natural material.

Here are a few tips to keep your Ankole items in excellent condition for years to come:

  • Avoid soaking the Ankole pieces in water. They are porous and can absorb water and swell, eventually becoming brittle or breaking. Instead, wipe with a soft, damp cloth.
  • Ankole is shaped by using heat, so avoid exposing your jewelry to hot surfaces or direct flame. Heat will cause them to dry out or even melt.
  • Avoid using abrasive cleaners, as these can scratch the horn. If your Ankole piece has brass components, avoid contact with the horn when you are using a special polishing cloth or other cleaners.
  • Keep your Ankole pieces shiny by buffing them with a soft cloth.
